When To Shop For a Renovation

Homeowners will often ask the question,

“When is the best time to start the process of my renovation?”.

The answer will typically vary depending on: how big the scope of work is, what season or time of year it is, whether you’re looking for improvements to be done in the interior of your home or exterior, and lastly, the big one, the expectation of when the project is to be complete.

Renovations, in general, are seasonal. Homeowners tend to start thinking about home improvements around the beginning of Spring. This is about the time where the weather starts warming up and the thoughts of getting some work done on the house before the summer’s end is very appealing. For renovators, the busiest time of year starts around this time.

If you’ve planned ahead and started the process in early January, the ball is already rolling by the time things pick up and you’ve put yourself in an ideal situation. You’ve secured your spot in the cue, you’ve made most of the hard decisions regarding the details of your project, and now all you have to do is sit back, relax and watch things come together!

Starting the process between the Spring and Fall could result in slightly longer lead times for quotes and obtaining materials seeing as it is the busiest time for everyone. It’s a fine science because this is also the time where most homeowners want to start and finish their renovation. We would recommend that the earlier you start the process, the more enjoyable the renovation will be for you. During this particularly busy stretch of time, due to the influx of clients, the process may seem more stressful or seem like you have less time in between decisions as we are trying our best to meet expectations of deadlines.

No matter when you want your renovation project, remember that the earlier you start the process the better. By choosing when you start carefully you will be much more relaxed and able to work with your renovator in a constructive and informative way. We would recommend spending some of your winter cocooning time planning that renovation so you can save time and money which will result in a much more satisfying experience.
